Nigeria’s flag-bearers in the CAF Confederation Cup, Akwa and Nasarawa United both recorded winning starts in their campaign in this year’s competition.
Akwa United surprised many as they posted a 1-0 win over Vita Club Mokanda on Saturday in a preliminary round first leg game of the second tier African club competition.
Ubong Ekpai scored the only goal of the game in the 37th minute, after which he admitted he was deeply delighted to score the only goal which earned his side victory in their first ever continental game.
Elsewhere, Nigeria’s other CAF Confederation Cup campaigners Nasarawa United secured a slim 2-1 win against Senegalese side, Generation Foot, in their first leg preliminary round, clash at the National Stadium, Abuja on Sunday.
Tayo Fabiyi scored the opener for the Solid Miners in the fifth minute, however, Niane got the equalizer for the visitors in the 52nd minute; thus silencing the home fans.
Coach Kabiru Dogo tutored side however restored their lead through Seun Sogbeso in the later stages of the game when they converted from the spot after a Generation Foot player handled the ball in the box.
Both teams will need to keep their nerve for the second leg games billed for fortnight.
