Two goals hero in Enyimba’s 5-1 thumping of Burundi club, Vital’O on Sunday Mfon Udoh says he is happy to have helped his side to the emphatic win but insists that the race for a second round ticket is not over yet.
The NPFL champions Enyimba International were at their best in Port Harcourt on Sunday as they crushed Vital’O in the their first leg of the CAF Champions League First Round clash with the NPFL goal king netting his second brace of the continental campaign.
The former Akwa United man who holds the NPFL goals record of 23 league goals in a season in an exclusive interview with fcnaija.com thanked his team-mates for their effort and hard work but believes the second leg tie in Burundi should not be taken for granted.
“I am very happy that my contribution has put my team (Enyimba) in the driving seat for a place in the next round of the CAF Champions League. It was important we win big and that’s the mindset we approached the game with.
“I’m not surprised that we won with that goal margin because everyone in the team worked really hard. The margin gives us a huge advantage ahead of the second leg but I make bold to say that the tie is far from being over.
“Another 90 minutes awaits us in Burundi so we have to prepare and work hard top ensure we get a positive result in the return leg. In football, you can’t leave anything to chance that’s why I think preparations for the return leg begin now.” Udoh stated.
Stephen Chukwude scored the first goal in the 21st minute before Udoh added another goal seven minutes later. Chukwude completed his brace in the 38th minute to give Enyimba three-goal lead in the first half.
In the second half Udoh also completed his brace just before the hour-mark, while Vital’O pulled one back, Leonard Ugochukwu ensured that Enyimba have a four-goal advantage with his 85th minute strike.
It was a delightful end to a game Enyimba had started strongly and they will travel to Bujumbura in a week’s time, knowing they have done enough at home.
