With South Africa’s best goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune missing most of the season through injury again, Bafana legend Linda Buthelezi has a solution for Kaizer Chiefs.
“I think Khune needs a rest. He needs a rest and the coach has to play a very important role in encouraging the goalkeepers who are deputizing for him and say; ‘look you have the opportunity now make the most of it’,” Buthelezi told Goal.com
Amakhosi have Reyaad Pieterse and Brilliant Khuzwayo to cover for him, and Buthelezi stated that Khune can learn from other great keepers when they were on the sidelines.
“He needs guidance. He shouldn’t go overboard. He must be level-headed and always work hard and he also needs to work with the team. He must know sometimes he must work alone,” Buthelezi said.
“His attitude will go a long way in determining whether or not he makes a return to the national team and grabs a spot abroad.
“The main important thing is the attitude. As long as he gets the attitude right. Remember the attitude the late Senzo Meyiwa had?… If he has that attitude they will call him to the national team. To a certain extent he has the advantage of playing overseas,” he added.
“The unfortunate thing is that it’s not easy for a goalkeeper in this country to go to Europe, but I still believe he can be Bafana’s number one goalkeeper if he has the right attitude,” Buthelezi concluded to Goal.
