The Kenya women national team Harambee Starlets opened their CECAFA Women Championships on a winning note, thumping hosts Uganda 4 – 0 in the two nations’ Group A clash on Sunday 11 September.
The win for Kenya was somewhat a replication of the win in Kisumu in a friendly match in July.
Starlets took the lead in the 22nd minute through the prolific Thika Queens winger Mary Kinuthia for a 1-0 lead at half time.
Upon resumption, Esse Akida, who has been in fine form for the team, doubled the lead just four minutes in before substitute Corazone Aquino, who had come on for veteran Doreen Nabwire scored a third with a long range effort on the 75th minute.
Akida then rounded up the business with her second and Starlets’ fourth with two minutes remaining.
Earlier in the day, Burundi thumped Zanzibar 10-1 as Zanzibar goal keeper saw red in the dying minutes of the first half.
Starlets will take on Burundi in their next group tie on Tuesday 13 September, the same day hosts Uganda will be looking to redeem themselves as they lock horns with Zanzibar.
