Jose Mourinho began his era as Manchester United manager in the premier league with a comprehensive win courtesy goals by Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic as they brushed aside Bournemouth by 3-1 at the Vitality Stadium this afternoon.
Juan Mata was surprisingly handed a starting spot by manager Jose Mourinho as a knock ruled out Jesse Lingard and Henrikh Mkhitaryan could only manage a place on the bench while Bournemouth gave a start to record signing Jordon Ibe alongside Callum Wilson and Joshua King.
Bournemouth showed plenty respect in their play against Manchester United as the Red Devils controlled possession.
However, it was Wilson that had the first opportunity in the game when he latched onto a loose ball inside the area, only to blast his effort wide of the target.
United took charge of the game from there as Anthony Martial created an opening for himself when he danced down the left flank but flashed his shot wide.
Wayne Rooney joined in on the action as Antonio Valencia and Ander Herrera combined to set him up but his shot was well saved by Arthur Boruc in goal for the home side.
But just before half-time, Manchester United took the lead inside the Vitality stadium as he latched onto a defensive error and carefully placed beyond the keeper to make it 1-0
The match picked up pace in the second half and both teams gave it a real go from the blast of the referee’s whistle.
However, it was Mourinho’s side that took the lead as Wayne Rooney connected a snap shot from Anthony Martial with a cheeky header which beats Boruc for 2-0 to United and made it his 87th away goal in the premier league.
That goal did not last four minutes before new signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic picked the ball from 35yards out and bullets it into the bottom left corner of the net to make it 3-0.
Bournemouth pulled one back courtesy a lovely strike by Smith who drove in from the right side before releasing a left foot shot that flew past David de Gea in goal for the visitors.
