Despite a slow start with the South Africa Under-23 team, former Bafana Bafana defender Matthew Booth has backed Lorenzo Gordinho.
“I think he has got to go at it step by step,” Booth told Goal.com
“It makes sense for him to first get called up to the under 23’s because he will be more of an asset to the Olympic team.”
Gordinho came under fire after being substituted early against the Brazil U23 team but he’s impressed for his club Kaizer Chiefs in his first proper season with the club.
“He deserves the [U23’s] call-up. He has done well enough at Chiefs to get him into the under 23 team.
“I think for the senior national team, I like to see players have one or two good seasons on a regular basis for their teams before they get called up to the national team,” Booth concluded to Goal.
