Zinedine Zidane, the Real Madrid manager, did not have a comfortable night out on his third match in charge of the team as it was pegged to a 1 – 1 draw in the Sunday 24 January La Liga clash.
Real Madrid, and Zidane have had a comfortable past few matches but the same was not the case here as Real were given a real scare when Cejudo scored an early opener for the hosts at the Estadio Benito Villamarin. Betis had gone to the game on a long streak without a goal but needed just seven minutes to breach the giants.
Madrid keeper Keylor Navas used his legs to block a shot, but the ball was only partially cleared to Cejudo who was well positioned and slammed into the net through the top corner to give Betis a 1 – 0 lead.
Real Madrid went close on the 16th minute with Cristiano Ronaldo hitting it well but Betis keeper Adan was well alert and Ronaldo’s calls for a penalty thereafter fell on deaf ear.
Madrid’s patient approach almost paid off on 21 minutes; the visitors eventually created a chance. A ball was swung in by Danilo from the right, straight on to the forehead of Isco. But the bearded Madrid midfielder couldn’t generate enough power to trouble Betis keeper Adan.
Another penalty appeal from the Real Madrid side fell on a deaf ear once again as Karim Benzema was about to pull the trigger inside the Betis box, only to tumble when a Betis defender tripped him in the heel.
That one looked like a genuine penalty cry.
Real Madrid continued to huff and puff, raising the tempo in the second half and after a number of misses and saves, they managed to breach the Betis defence line to net the equalizer on the 71st minute.
The leveler was somewhat controversial with James Rodriguez being half a yard offside when he collected a through ball, and squared to Karim Benzema for the easiest of tap-ins.
Betis almost got the winner in the final minutes of the game with Ruben Castro wriggling clear of two Madrid defenders before smashing a ferocious shot from distance that whizzed past the left post.
With the result, Real Madrid, on 44 points failed to close in on the leading duo of Barcelona and Atletico Madrid who have 48 points each.
