Latest report from England indicate that Liverpool striker Christian Benteke is now a doubt for this weekend’s highly anticipated Premier League clash against Chelsea.
The Belgium international is reportedly suffering medial knee ligament damage.
This will be a big a letdown for the 24-year-old who had only returned from a hamstring problem last week, but it is believed that the Belgian picked up a fresh injury during Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Southampton.
According to The Express, Liverpool are hoping that Benteke’s ligaments have only tweaked, but the striker has been ruled out of tonight’s Capital One Cup tie against Bournemouth after undergoing a hospital scan on Monday.
There are concerns that the forward may not recover in time to play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, leaving Divock Origi as the club’s only fit recognised striker.
Daniel Sturridge is still nursing a knee problem and Danny Ings is expected to miss the rest of the season with cruciate ligament damage.
