Baroka FC showed that they do not plan to relinquish their position at the top of the NFD standings, after they brushed aside Cape Town All Stars 4-0 at the Athlone Stadium on Saturday.
The match was one of five NFD games played on the day, with Highlands Park, African Warriors and Witbank Spurs also recording wins.
Cape Town All Stars 0-4 Baroka FC
The Limpopo team had gone into the game with just one point from their last two matches, but bounced back in style at Athlone.
An early goal from Thabiso Kutumela, who followed up to score in an empty net after Kyle Peters had made the initial save, put Baroka in the driving seat early on. Victor Letsoalo then increased the lead five minutes before half time when he pounced from close range after the hosts failed to clear their line.
The third goal arrived 10 minutes into the second half as Ngwenya Dumisani raced through in goal after some sloppy defending before squeezing in a shot at the near post. Kutumela completed his brace 17 minutes from time when rounded Peters before netting.
FC Cape Town 0-0 Thanda Royal Zulu
This was Saturday’s only score-less game, both sides however picking up a valuable point in their respective quests to move clear of the drop zone.
Black Leopards 0-1 Witbank Spurs
A first half own goal, by Lidoda Duvha defender Djunga Munganga, was enough to hand Spurs maximum points up in the Limpopo as the Witbank team hung on to position two on the standings, just a point behind Baroka.
Highlands Park 2-0 Vasco da Gama
Highlands Park moved into the top three with a 2-0 home win over Vasco, thanks to two late goals. The first came from Peter Shalulile on 77 minutes, before Jermaine Christian sealed the victory with an 81st minute penalty.
African Warriors 4-1 Moroka Swallows
Ange Lebayi netted twice for Warriors, both goals from the spot, while Mfundo Nsele also weighed in with a brace for the home side. Boysen Mbatha registered the Birds’ solitary goal, the two sides having gone in to the break at 1-1 before Warriors secured the win in the second stanza.
