Barcelona stars Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets and Ivan Rakitic believe their recent poor run of results will not in any way hamper their chances of retaining the La Liga title at the end of the current campaign.
Barcelona who ahead of Sunday’s fixture were three points clear at the top of the log saw that point difference cut to zero by Atletico Madrid while fierce rivals Real Madrid are just one point behind them following a 2-1 home defeat to Valencia.
The defeat was Barcelona’s third straight in La Liga, their second in a row at home and although they are now even with Atlético Madrid on points, Luis Enrique’s remain the front-runner on superior goal difference.
And despite falling to their fourth La Liga loss of the Catalans’ stars are resolute that their team will come good in the end.
Defender who was left unmarked in the area and had a clean look at goal at the far post but fired wide for the final opportunity of the game remains positive that the title is theirs for the taking.
“On a normal day we would have won four to one. We have no margin for error, we have no cushion left. On a normal day we would have won four to one.”
“If the team plays like we did today, I’m sure we will win the league. Despite having taken a step backwards it’s good for the team to know that today we played very well. We must win the remaining five games.” Pique told the club’s official website after the defeat.
Besides Gerard Piqué, midfielder Sergio Busquets and Ivan Rakitic also spoke to the media after the match, insisting they have all it takes to retain the title.
“We are on a bad run. They attack once and a half and score two goals. The team is fine but the goals aren’t coming. We need to work more.
“We still depend on ourselves. We have five matches and we can not lose another game. We didn’t lose due to attitude or desire.
“The team gave everything but it was not to be. Together we are stronger.” Busquets stated.
Croatian star Ivan Rakitic in his opinion believes staying tohgether as a unit and paying attention to little details will ensure they emerge title winners at the end of the season.
“Valencia attacked twice and scored two goals, we have had a ton of occasions to score, but that’s football.
“We have to stay together to avoid the little things that decided the match. Our attitude, desire and rhythm have been spectacular, but today the ball did not want to go in.
“We are sad because of how well we played and how little it mattered. It is not easy, but together we will fight until the end.” Rakitic added.
