While English fans were busy doing things that would shame their country, Welsh fans played the perfect role as the proverbial 12th man, cheering their team to beat Slovakia at a point when the two sides seemed to be heading to a draw.
Hal Robson – Kanu came off the bench to score the winner after Gareth Bale’s early opener in the Group B game and speaking after the win in Bordeaux, Bale lauded the fans for their contribution to the win on Wales’ first ever appearance at the tournament.
The Welsh fans belted a rendition of the country’s national anthem to spur the team to a win and Bale admits it played a massive role.
“Like I’ve said before there’s no other fans like the Welsh. No other country would think of doing things like that to lift the team.
“We were under the cosh a bit towards the end but our fans were the 12th man and pulled us through. We worked hard as a team, run until we couldn’t run any more. We’ve given everything for each other and that’s why we got the result,” he said.
Bale and his team mates will next be facing England on Thursday and the Real Madrid forward is hoping for another good result.
