Former Golden Eaglets striker Taiwo Awoniyi has tipped Nigeria’s U-17 team lead by Emmanuel Amunike to win the ongoing tournament in Chile.
The Eaglets breezed into the final following a hard-fought 4-2 victory over Mexico in the semifinals taking their goals tally to 21, conceding just five en-route the final and Awoniyi is confident that the team can win the trophy.
“I’m very proud of the entire team and kudos to daddy Amuneke,” Awoniyi said. “I pray that they beat Mali and retain the Cup.”
Awoniyi was part of the team that won the title two years ago – a squad that also had current manager Amunike alongside Nduka Ugbade and Emeka Amadi as assistants to Manu Garba and the 18-year-old has revealed how the coaches inspired them to win the trophy and hopes it will be the same outcome today.
“I remember two years back, he has this great saying that you can never forget. He says remain focus and be ready for d next challenge, think less of the victory so far but use it to inspire yourself untill you there finally,” he reveals.
“Coach Amadi told us a story which on that day I believe helped and I pray he remembers to tell the boys the same.”
The final between Nigeria and Mali will be played at the Estadio Sausalito.
