Gor Mahia and Uganda Cranes midfielder Khalid Aucho has dedicated his winner against Botswana in the Saturday 4 June African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier to the late Abel Dhaira, a former Uganda goalkeeper who died earlier in the year after battling cancer.
William Luwagga Kizito opened the scoring in the game in Francistown in the 9th minute but Botswana equalized soon after and it was Aucho who got the second that saw Cranes win 2 – 1.
Aucho, quoted on Ugandan sports site, kawowo.com, said Dhaira was like a brother to him and he played the match for him
“Dhaira was my brother. I miss him so much. I played this game for him. I also dedicate this goal to him. We believed in ourselves. We worked for this away victory. The style and fashion of goals scored was also practiced in training. I am so happy. I thank God for this victory,” he said.
The victory took the Cranes top of Group D in the AFCON 2017 Qualifiers placing the team in good standing to qualify, with Comoros set to tour Kampala in their last group game in September.
