The much anticipated Madrid derby ended all square as Atletico Madrid came from a goal down to peg back Real Madrid to a 1 – 1 draw in the Spanish La Liga game staged at the Vicente Calderon on Sunday 4 October.
Real Madrid had a fast start, dominating the early proceedings with the Atletico fans giving the game the real derby feel with boos whenever star forward Ronaldo touched the ball.
Atletico’s Angel Correa had the chance to open the scoring on the fourth minute but he steered his attempt off target and they would live to rue the miss as moments later, Real opened the scoring.
Karim Benzema rose the highest to head home Danny Carvajal’s cross in for the opener through the top corner and the lead was almost crushed immediately after with Correa missing another good chance.
Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos was returning from injury in the game and it almost went awry when he conceded a penalty as he was adjudged to have fouled Tiago in the box.
Goalkeeper Kaylor Navas however saved him blushes with a great save to keep out Antoine Griezman’s penalty.
Real won a free kick from 35 yards but Ronaldo’s delivery went off target, summing up his first half woes as he attracted too much attention from the Atletico players and fans alike when he had possession.
Real Madrid seemed to be headed for another derby win until Luciano Vietto got the leveler on the 83rd minute after Jackson Martinez sent in a cross that was flicked by Griezman for Vietto to easily tap in.
Jackson Martinez would have made it worse for Real after stealing in on the second minute of added time but his powerful drive was well watched by Navas.
The shared spoils saw Real miss out on the La Liga summit but brought to an end Atletico’s two – match losing streak.
