Arsenal and Super Eagles forward Alex Iwobi says he hopes his performance in Saturday’s FA Cup clash against Burnley had a good impression on one of Nigeria’s and Arsenal’s finest ex footballer Kanu Nwankwo.
The Nigerian international was handed a third start as Arsenal scored two fine goals to secure their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup at the expense of a hard-working Burnley side., with former Gunner Kanu watching on from the stands. Iwobi posted an impressive showing for 71 minutes before making way for one of the club’s long-serving star Tomas Rosicky.
Speaking to Arsenal Player after the encounter, the 19-year old said;
“I hope I impressed him (Kanu), I’ve seen him before and he’s always giving me loads of talks. I hope I did well in the game to impress him.” Iwobi told Arsenal Player.
On his assessment of the game, the forward added;
“I think we played very well the whole game, even though we conceded a goal from a set-piece, which we weren’t too happy about. We feel like we did very well and are confident about going through to the next round.”
Calum Chambers curled shot into the top corner to give Arsenal the lead before the visitors equalized through Sam Vokes.
Having impressed with his attacking prowess during the opening 45 minutes, Iwobi soon showed his defensive qualities at the start of the second half. The Nigerian youngster had to be really alert to get a crucial foot on the ball in his own area to deny Gray from close range.
Arsenal re-established their lead moments later from a sweeping counter-attack involving Iwobi, Giroud and Iwobi again before Oxlade-Chamberlain cut the ball back across goal for Alexis to slam into the top corner for 2-1.
