Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Alexis Sanchez will miss the Gunners’ festive fixtures after suffering a setback with the hamstring injury sustained against Norwich City last month.
Sanchez had been set to return to the substitutes’ bench for Monday’s Premier League 2-1 victory against Manchester City at the Emirates but was left out of the team few hours to kickoff.
Wenger revealed after the 2-1 win, which moved Arsenal to within two points of leaders Leicester City, that the former Barcelona star had been forced to withdraw from his plans over the weekend.
“I think he will be back January 10. Christmas period – you can’t count him.”
“Two days ago he had had a slight one yet but he planned to be on the bench tonight but he is so keen he got a little bit of a pain and we didn’t take a gamble.” Wenger told the Arsenal official website.
Arsenal survived a late onslaught to secure a hard-fought victory against title rivals Manchester City on a tense Monday night at Emirates Stadium.
First-half goals from Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud had put the hosts in charge and the Gunners looked comfortable but with eight minutes remaining Toure put hearts in mouths when he sent a curling shot into the top corner.
