West Ham United have added an unknown Nigerian, Olatunji Akintola to their ranks ahead of the 2016/17 season.
Akintola, a 17-year old from the West Ham academy, was unveiled on Wednesday after he signed professional terms with them.
It is the youngster’s first professional contract and he spoke of how excited he is to have signed with the Hammers’ first team.
“It’s a great feeling for me and my family, a very proud day,” he told the West Ham website.
“It feels great that the club have shown faith in me to give me another three years to help develop myself as a footballer.
“I’ve been here since I was eight so it’s been nine years of hard work. But I’m playing for a top Premier League academy so I’m definitely enjoying it so well,” he said.
Akintola came through the ranks and has been a member of the West Ham U18s, where he has become an important player and helped them qualify for the playoffs.
The Hammers only recently had two other Nigerians on their books – Victor Moses and Emmanuel Emenike.
Akintola is a highly-rated defender and is expected to take part in the club’s pre-season training ahead of the next season.
