Ronaldo made it 11 Champions League title for Real Madrid Saturday night in Milan as he converted the last spot kick at Milan’s San Siro stadium on Saturday night.
Yannick Ferreira Carrasco cancelled out a Sergio Ramos opener in the 79th minute, before the two teams played out a goalless extra-time period to force penalties in the European final.
Each of the first seven takers netted in the shootout, but Juanfran’s miss allowed Cristiano Ronaldo to step forward and win another crown for Real Madrid courtesy of a 5-3 penalty success.
Sergio Ramos put Los Blancos deservedly ahead after just 15 minutes when he poked Gareth Bale’s headed flick-on past the impressive Jan Oblak.
Real dominated the opening 45 minutes, but Atletico were gifted the chance to net an equaliser just seconds after the restart when Pepe conceded a penalty, only for star man Antoine Griezmann to send his spot kick against the bar.
Diego Simeone’s men struggled to fire on all cyliders for the majority of the game, and it seemed they could be left to rue that missed chance.
But they suddenly sparked to life when half-time substitute Carrasco scored with just 11 minutes remaining to pull Atleti level and force extra-time.
Both sides had chances to find the winner an the additional half-hour, but it seemed the derby tie was destined to go to a shoot-out.
Both sides exhibited exquisite technique from the spot, but penalties can be cruel to the best players, and it was Atletico defender Juanfran who was guilty this time, as he fired his side’s fourth penalty against the post.
That left Portuguese superstar Ronaldo to wrap up the win, and he made no mistake as Real were crowned European champions again
