Former Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso has backed the Spanish giants to push on for major honors in the season despite a tough start to the season which also saw the team whacked 4 – 0 by arch rivals Barcelona.
Alonso spent five year at the Santiago Bernabeu before leaving in the summer of 2014 for Bayern Munich but has always kept tabs on his former club and believes they will be fighting for everything at the end of the current season.
“[Madrid] are a great team, with great players in all positions.
“They have experience and good foundations. Despite their bad start, I’m sure they’ll be fighting for everything at the end of the season,” he told football-espana.net.
Real Madrid recently sacked Rafa Benitez after a string of unconvincing results but Alonso who worked with Benitez at Liverpool, believes the Spaniard is a great coach just that he could not get it right at the Bernabeu.
He remembers his time in Madrid with great nostalgia, especially after helping the team win its 10th European title before leaving.
“Rafa Benitez is a methodical and analytical Coach but couldn’t imprint his touch on the whole squad.
“Of course I miss Real Madrid. They were five very good years.
“I felt recognised, valued and respected there, and that’s very important to me.” He added.
