Ajax Cape Town were knocked out of the Nedbank Cup in the Last 32 at the hands of Free State Stars at Athlone Stadium, with the visitors claiming a 2-1 win.
The Urban Warriors continued their trend of starting the match strongly, dictating play and attacking in numbers. However, it was the visitors who struck first when Nhanhla Vilakazi was left unmarked in the Ajax penalty area and remained calm to open the scoring.
Ajax replied swiftly shortly before the half-time break when Erwin Isaacs’ corner kick was met by Tashreeq Morris and eventually turned into the net by Justice Chabalala to ensure the two sides go into the half-time break level.
The home-side came out strong once again in the second half, but it was Stars who went ahead again through a well-taken goal by Ayanda Nkosi. Ajax continued to push, creating numerous chances but the Stars defence stood firm.
Despite a number of chances coming for the Urban Warriors, they were unable to convert any, bowing out of the competition in which they reached the finals in the previous edition.
