Liverpool’s signed Estonia international defender Ragnar Klavan from Augsburg, after he completed a medical yesterday.
They desperately needed the back with Mamadou Sakho going to start the season later due to a foot problem, and Joe Gomez likewise, while Tiago Ilori represents Portugal in the Olympics.
Klavan has enjoyed four seasons in the Bundesliga and is looking forward to playing for manager Jurgen Klopp.
“I’m really honoured to be part of this amazing club, this amazing team,” he told the Liverpool official site.
Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip are expected to start the season ahead of Klavan.
Moving on from defenders, the Reds are looking to step up their midfield strengthening. After closing in on Georginio Wijnaldum of Newcastle, ESPN sources believe Klopp also wants his teammate Moussa Sissoko.
Liverpool and Juventus are reportedly interested in Sissoko.
The midfielder was inconsistent for Newcastle, but impressed for France at Euro 2016, particularly in the final. One possibility is that agents are using Liverpool’s name to drive up the price from the likes of Juventus. Such tactics have often been used before a player joins a Serie A club instead of the Reds.
