Even though he is not getting enough playing time at his club, Chelsea, Mikel is doing great things in the Green and White colours of Nigeria.
Just recently, Mikel despite mounting challenges, he led the Nigeria under-23s to a bronze medal finish at the Summer Olympics in Brazil.
That was the only medal won by Nigeria at the Rio Olympics.
At the moment, the mission Mikel has embarked on is leading the country to her sixth World Cup appearance at the Russia 2018.
It is yet to be seen if any of the three Nigerian players nominated will end up with the continent’s top prize.
The Nigerian trio will be battling it out with other prominent players which include Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez and Islam Slimani, Cameroon’s Samurl Eto’o, Cote d’Ivoire’s Eric Bailly, Egypt’s Mohamed Salah, holder Pierre Emerick Aubameyang from Gabon, and Ghana’s Andre Ayew among others.
