Ugandan striker George Abege got the only goal as Coastal side Bandari FC overcame Ulinzi Stars in the GOtv Shield quarter final clash staged at the Mombasa County Stadium on Saturday 7 November.
Ahead of the game, rumors were rife that the Ulinzi Stars head coach Robert Matano is on his way out of the team and he did little to prove otherwise, only shouting a few instructions from the bench as goalkeeper coach Francis Onyiso did the coaching from the touchline.
The soldiers will have only themselves to blame after losing myriads of chances in the second half when they put Bandari constantly on the back foot.
The hosts dominated the entire opening period and the scorching 1pm sun down at the coast was a huge factor as Ulinzi never pushed hard.
Ulinzi Stars’ Boniface Onyango volleyed an effort over the bar after the Bandari backline had failed to deal with a Kevin Amwayi long throw from the right.
Bandari’s Shabaan Kenga forced Francis Ochieng to turn a fierce cross from the right over for a corner as Bandari sought to make the most of their early possession.
Ulinzi moved forward again after 19 minutes this time showing some good passing by Amwayi’s shot from the edge of the box from an Enosh Ochieng cut back never did much to trouble Wilson Obungu in the Ulinzi goal.
Bandari’s constant pushing bore fruit on the 32nd minute with Abege hitting a wonderful effort into the top left of Francis Ochieng as the Ulinzi Stars defenders were caught napping.
Ulinzi resumed second half with guns blazing after the introduction of John Makwatta in place of Enosh Ochieng and Makwatta had a number of openings to level the scores but in all occasions he wasted the chances.
Substitute Massoud Juma had a great chance to finish off the game nine minutes from time but he shot wide one on one with Francis Ochieng. In the 90th minute Dancun Otewa cleared off the line an Ezekiel Otuoma effort after keeper Obungu had come to claim a cross but could not hold it.
