Nigeria Olympic team coach Samson Siasia submitted his final squad for the Olympic Games to the Nigeria Football Federation in time to beat Thursday’s deadline, with Super Eagles skipper John Obi Mikel in as one of the over-aged players, fcnaija.com has learnt.
The final list of 18 players and four alternates was submitted to the Glass House after Siasia made up his mind on the team he will take to Rio, despite the disappointment of players not being released by their clubs.
Mikel, who failed to attend the Beijing 2008 Olympics where Nigeria won a silver medal, is believed to have been keen on going to Brazil and as a result, has been included in the list as one of the over-aged players.
“Mikel is in the final squad that was submitted to the NFF, he has assured the coach he will join them for the Olympics and that is why he was included,” a top source informed.
Siasia has seen a spate of withdrawals from his provisional 35-man list, with the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho, Alex Iwobi and Godfrey Oboabona pulling out due to club engagements.
