Julian Draxler has emerged as a £38million alternative target for Manchester United if they fail to land first-choice target Henrikh Mkhitaryan, according to the Sunday People.
Germany international Draxler only joined Wolfsburg from fellow Bundesliga side Schalke last summer – but Jose Mourinho has told Ed Woodward he’s a player he’d like at Old Trafford should they be unable to get a deal done for Mkhitaryan.
Having sold fellow midfielder Ilkay Gundogan to Manchester City in a £20million deal recently, German giants Dortmund aren’t keen to lose any more of their top names in this window.
But Mkhitaryan – who scored 11 goals in 31 League games and was named Bundesliga Players’ player of the season with fifteen assists – wants out.
The deal would cost United around £28m, and the Armenia international agent’s Mino Raiola is determined to make it happen.
He said: “We are still talking to Dortmund. We are trying to be reasonable. They are aware that Micki wants to leave now.”
If Dortmund don’t budge though, United will turn to Draxler.
But that presents its own problems for transfer negotiator Woodward, with Wolfsburg already issuing a hands-off warning on their young star.
Meanwhile, Woodward will press on with trying to conclude negotiations to land free-agent superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic now his Sweden side are out of Euro 2016.
