The Welsh national team recovered from the England setback to beat Russia 3 – 0 in the final Group B match on Monday 20 June to secure their place in the second round as the top team from the Group following England’s barren draw with Slovakia in the other group game.
The two teams went to the match knowing only a win would guarantee passage to the next round and it was Wales who settled in fastest, with Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey netting the opener on the 11th minute with a nice clipped goal after fine build up started by Joe Allen.
Then cruise control for Wales saw Neil Taylor get his first international goal as a ball found him unmarked at the back post, his first shot saved by Akinfeev and the second, a rebound, going in to give the Welsh a comfortable lead heading to the break.
Gareth Bale, who had scored in each of the opening two matches, was on hand again here with the third goal for his country at the tournament and in the match, making him the leading scorer in the tournament.
The great start to the competition is great for Wales who are participating in their first ever Euro Championships and they will be looking to continue with the run in the quarter finals of the tournament and they will have an advantage having finished top of the group with six points.
