Danny Drinkwater scored a brilliant late goal to ensure champions Leicester City finished with 81 points as they held Chelsea to a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge on the final day of the Premier League season on Sunday.
Cesc Fabregas had given Chelsea the lead in the 66th minute, and just when they thought they had gotten one over the newly crowned champions, Drinkwater showed why Leicester have won the Premier League this year with his beautifully taken goal in the 82nd minute.
The immediate past champions looked the brighter side in the opening exchanges, with Pedro getting their first chance as early as the seventh minute, when picked up an inch-perfect pass inside the box and fired the ball by a whisker of the right post.
The first half ended goalless, with nothing but pride being played for, Chelsea already knowing they couldn’t finish higher than ninth, and Leicester already emerging champions.
The first goal of the game however came in the 66th minute, when Fabregas smoothly converted from the penalty spot with a beautiful low drive into the left side of the net, after Jeffery Schlupp had fouled a Chelsea player inside the box.
Just when Chelsea thought they would get maximum points, Drinkwater hit them where it hurts most, as he received a pass, made some space for himself and unleashed a long-range thunderbolt of a shot which went into the bottom left corner and past the goalkeeper.
The draw meant Leicester finished the season with 81 points, while Chelsea finished 10th, with 50 points.
