The Kenya national women’s team Harambee Starlets played to a 2 – 2 draw away to Algeria in the second round first leg qualifier of the 2016 African Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) clash played on Friday 8 April in Algiers.
The hosts took the lead through Naima Bouhani on the 29th minute but Kenya levelled on the 78th minute through an own goal from Fatima Sekouane before Mwanahalima Adam fired Kenya into a 2 – 1 lead on the 85th minute.
On the 90th minute, Bouhani completed her brace to end the tie at 2 – 2.
David Ouma had handed goalie Samantha Akinyi her national debut with Neddy Atieno and two time Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) top scorer Mwanahalima Adam leading the striking force.
The draw, with two away goals will serve as an advantage to the team and heading to the return leg in Nairobi, all they need is a win, goalless draw or a 1 – 1 score line in the on Tuesday 12 April in Nairobi to seal a place at the finals to be held in Cameroon.
Kenya got a bye to the second round after Democratic Republic of Congo pulled out citing financial challenges. Algeria on their side eliminated Ethiopia in the first round.
