In a game they needed to win to stand a better chance of making the Champions League next season, Chelsea however fluffed their lines as they were beaten at Stamford Bridge 2-1 by PSG on Wednesday night.
The English champions knew exactly what they needed to do on the night and despite scoring shortly after conceding the opener, they still went ahead to lose and with the sitting 10th on the Premier League table, it does look like they won’t be playing in Europe next season.
They however started with an early burst down the right from Pedro. He tries to find Diego Costa but the ball runs away from the striker.
Moments later, as they kept pressing high up the pitch, they regained possession after a poor pass out of the defence. Willian picks out Diego Costa who turns and shoots, but it’s saved by the PSG goalkeeper.
It would be PSG’s turn to attack as Angel Di Maria was put through on goal but a brilliant goal-line clearance from Branislav Ivanovic kept Chelsea in the game.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic would put the ball in the net from the resulting corner but the flag was up for offside and it won’t count.
Ibrahimovic would be in the thick of it again as he was fouled by Ivanovic by the touchline and the resulting free-kick worked into the box only for the big Swede to be found offside once again.
Ibrahimovic, showing the stuff he’s made of and imposing himself in the game would find himself again at the end of a Di Maria pass and his square ball across the face of the Chelsea goal wasn’t cleared and Adrian Rabiot was on hand to give the French side the lead.
Already behind, Chelsea tried to push PSG behind their lines as Pedro does well down the right, driving forward at pace, before Hazard cuts inside and sees a shot blocked.
Mikel then forces the error from PSG again but Hazard can’t make the most of the chance, seeing his cross blocked.
Chelsea’s pressure paid off moments later as Diego Costa takes Willian’s pass in his stride, cuts back on to his left past Thiago Silva and finishes brilliantly much to the delight of the home fans.
The English champions, having equalised, with their now patient approach play ends with Willian very nearly slipping Diego Costa through on goal.
It was the French champions’ turn to attack and Ibrahimovic meets Lucas Moura’s deep cross with a powerful header but it’s easy for Courtois.
Both sides were showing great attacking intent in the end-to-end game as another Chelsea attack had Costa at the end of it again, his shot just outside the 18-yard box parried by the PSG goalkeeper, and Marquinhos was on hand to clear to safety with Pedro lurking.
The would be the last action of the half as the referee sounded the whistle for the the half time break with both sides going in with the score level.
The second half began just the way the first half ended with both sides attacking. Willian eas stopped in his tracks by Blaise Matuidi just outside the PSG 18-yard box but the referee waved play on and as the Parisiens attacked from the break, Moura was brought down by a cynical foul by Mikel, who was booked for the poor tackle.
Courtois was then quickly out of his lines to stop Ibrahimovic who had got in behind the Chelsea defence down the left as the ball hit his foot for a corner.
Chelsea were then unlucky as Mikel and Pedro work the ball out to Azpilicueta on the right but his cross deflects to Trapp. Another round of attack then saw Willian and Hazard both denied by Trapp. The keeper got down to save two efforts in quick succession.
Shortly after at the other end, Di Maria got away down the left and his cross was perfect for Ibrahimovic to volley home from just a few yards out to give them the lead again.
And so it was as the French giants dominated afterwards with Chelsea all but conceding the game to their visitors.
