Manchester United today earned a surprise 3-2 win over Arsenal and once again Marcus Rashford was the star of the occasion as he scored twice to put a huge dent on the Gunners title chances this season.
Manchester United came into the game at the back of a fantastic night in the Europa Cup while they breezed past FC Midtjylland 5-1 while Arsenal fell in the hands of Barcelona 2-0 at the Emirates but it was the Gunners that had the first chance to score but David de Gea superbly blocked a shot from his Spanish colleague Nacho Monreal.
That swung the home side into action as Memphis Depay fired in a right foot shot at goal but it was well held by Petr Cech. Arsenal forced two yellow cards on Varela and Michael Carrick as they began to dominate more but were hit by a swift counter-attack play from Manchester United as Ander Herrara and Varela combined to set-up Marcus Rashford who coolly slotted past Cech for the opening goal of the game.
The first goal was yet to fully settle in and the 18-year-old Rashford struck again as he rose highest to head home a cross from Jesse Lingard to make it 2-0 and his fourth goal in two matches.
Arsenal hit a goal back before the half-time and it was former Red Devils forward Danny Welbeck who headed in an Ozil freekick to make it 2-1.
The second half was as eventful as the first as both side looked for all three points and it was the home side that extended the lead as Ander Herrera received a pass from Marcus Rashford and his shot deflected off Laurent Koscielny past Cech for 3-1.
The Gunners fought back – De Gea keeps out Welbeck from close range, but the ball falls to Ozil, who smashes into the ground and it sails into the top corner of the net for 3-2.
