Akwa United coach Maurice Cooreman says they will need some luck to beat Sunshine Stars in Akure on Sunday in their opening fixture of the 2016 Nigeria Professional Football League.
The Nigeria Federation’s Cup champions are in away to Sunshine Stars in round one of the new season and despite having a good start to the year, Cooreman admits beating Sunshine in Akure will be tough and they will need some luck to do that.
“We play Sunshine Stars on Sunday in our first league game but I cannot just say we will beat them,” says Cooreman.
“When you play Sunshine in Akure you must have some luck like we have had recently because it will be tough to beat them there and you need some luck to make that happen,” he stated.
The Promise Keepers have had a very good start to the year, first winning the Super 4 pre-season tournament, then going away to win 1-0 against Vita Club Mokanda of Congo in their first ever appearance on the continent, before beating Enyimba on penalties to claim the 2016 Nigeria Charity Cup.
Sunshine meanwhile, led the table for much of last season but fell by the wayside in the end, as Enyimba claimed their sixth league title.
Round one fixtures:
Giwa FC v FC Ifeanyiubah

Rivers United v Enyimba

And on Saturday, it was a battle of two of the newly promoted sides, Plateau United beating Niger Tornadoes 1-0.
