The game started with PSG exerting early pressure, Lucas Moura made a solo run into the Chelsea area but was perfectly intercepted by Gary Cahill, as the Premier League champions struggled to get a foothold on the game.
PSG’s early dominance almost turned to a goal in the third mibute as Marco Verratti’s shot from outside the box was saved by Thibaut Courtois.
The French club continued to dominate as Blaise Matuidi’s smooth pass was recieved by Moura, who went past his marker but his shot from 30-yards was way off target.
Chelsea appeared to spring a few passes for the first time in the game afterwards but PSG’s tactic of chasing down every loose ball was troubling for them as they kept losing the it almost immediately after.
But Chelsea would almost take the lead against the run of play in the 23rd minute as a cross down the left-hand side was missed by David Luiz, only for Diego Costa to force a reaction save from the PSG goalkeeper for a corner-kick.
The resultant corner-kick was cleared by the PSG defense but Chelsea were beginning exert some pressure of their own. Another cross from the left-hand side found Ivanovic but his half volley could only find the side netting.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who had earlier recieved a booking for a stamp on Mikel, was found by a Marquinhos cross but his free header rebounded off the ground before resting in Courtois’ arm.
PSG then broke forward again with Matuidi doing a fine job of dispossessing Cesc Fabregas and fed Angel Di Maria, but his short was well off target.
They would eventually take the lead when an Ibrahimovic free-kick from 25-yards deflected off Mikel to go past Courtois. Mikel was responsible for the free-kick in the first instance, as his foul on Moura earned him a caution and PSG the free-kick.
The first half would end in an anti-climax as Chelsea equalized right at the death from the most unlikliest of sources – John Obi Mikel – and the Premier League champions went into the break on level terms.
The second half resumed with Chelsea bossing possession and Diego Costa went close but his shot was well saved by the PSG goalkeeper.
Shortly after, Courtois was called into action as Di Maria beat Baba Rahman down the right only to see his shot tipped over for a corner.
Chelsea at this point, looked to defend and hit PSG on the counter, but the Parisiens kept probing, and a Di Maria free-kick was parried away to safety.
The French champions would take the lead again as substitute Edison Cavani beat the Chelsea offsid-trap to slam home from an acute angle between the legs of Courtois.
Chelsea then went close again through Pedro, but his effort narrowly missed the target.
Chelsea’s charge to equal the score again bore no fruit and they have it all to play for in the return leg.
