Pedro scored a brace as and Andros Townsend scored a consolation goal as Chelsea showed their fans they have been missing all season with a commanding 5-1 demolition of Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday.
The Premier League champions began the game with huge intent as the passed the ball around nicely and their first chance of the game would come only two minutes in, as Nemanja Matic produced a stunning snap shot from the edge of the box, and the goalkeeper was a bit lucky as the ball went just wide of the right post. The ball went out of the pitch for a goal kick for Newcastle.
Chelsea continued to dominate and after just five minutes, Newcastle would be picking the ball out of their own net as Willian slipped the ball onto the path of Diego Costa, who steered it home from close range for Chelsea’s first goal of the evening.
After the goal, it looked like Newcastle would have an instant response, with Andros Townsend serving in a delicious cross into the Chelsea area but was perfectly cleared away. They would go on to earn a free kick a moment later, as Branislav Ivanovic was penalized for a poor challenge and Jonjo Shelvey floated the free kick in the goal area, but was easily cleared by the Chelsea defense.
Just when the Magpies thought they were making a headway in the game, a miscued pass from their defense was recovered by Pedro at the edge of the box, and the winger wasted no time as he slotted in for Chelsea’s second goal. 2-0 after only nine minutes.
Newcastle reacted well again, just like they did after conceding the first goal as the busy Townsend had a good chance to half the deficit, he ran towards the goal and unleashed a low shot from long range which went towards the middle of the goal, but Thibaut Courtois was ready and made a save for the Blues.
The Magpies continued to show intent even though Chelsea were equally unrelenting in their pursuit for a third goal but it would be the Blues that would put the ball at the back of the net once again, as Willian latched onto a lovely pass that put him one-on-one with the keeper and produced a fine strike that goes into the left side of the net.
The Premier League champions were cruising and Newcastle were badly bruising and it was obvious it would be a high scoring game at this point. Newcastle continued to show intent like they did after the first two goals, but Chelsea’s defending was keeping Shelvey and Townsend at bay.
They would come very close in the 35th minute, as Georginio Wijnaldum found a cross inside the box and fired a shot towards Courtois, who produced an excellent reflexive save to keep the scoreline the same. The first half would however come to an end with Chelsea cruising, and Newcastle needing to find a way back into the game.
The second half started with Newcastle still pushing to get something with Shelvey and Townsend majorly involved in most of their attacks, but as it had been all game, it would be Chelsea that scored again, Pedro getting his second of the night.
The Spanish winger scored with a brilliant shot into the bottom right corner after being released inside the box by a superb lofted pass from Cesc Fabregas to make it 4-0 and it looked like the Magpies were doomed at this stage.
The game wore on. Looking like Chelsea would go home with their 4-0 advantage but a pass from Cesar Azpilicueta to the feet of substitute Bertrand Traore, who took a shot from inside the box which went into the bottom right corner, to make it 5-0.
Andros Townsend however dented Chelsea’s perfect evening as he capped his impressive individual display with a great individual effort. He made a good run, skipped past defenders and smashed the ball from the edge of the box past the diving goalkeeper. His low drive went into the bottom left corner of the goal.
