As it is every week, we take a look at how Nigerian footballers have fared across the world and this week is no different as we review the performances of Nigerian players abroad and how they fared last weekend.
We start off in England today where Emmanuel Emenike made his debut for West Ham United after completing a loan move from Fenerbahce. The 28-year old was introduced by manager Slaven Bilic in the 73rd minute as they were 1-0 down at Southampton and he almost scored an equalizer shortly after. His compatriot at the club, Victor Moses started and played for 61 minutes before being taken off.
Victor Anichebe started and led West Brom’s attack at Newcastle and played for 71 minutes but couldn’t do much to prevent them from going down 1-0. Elsewhere, Osaze Odemwingie was a 62nf minute entrant for Stoke City but couldn’t help to his team as they went down 3-0 at home to Everton. John Obi Mikel played a starring role and impressed in Chelsea’s 1-1 with Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.
At White Hart Lane, Odion Ighalo was on from start to finish but couldn’t add to his 14 Premier League goals as they went down 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur. And over at the Etihad Stadium, Kelechi Iheanacho was a 52nd minute substitute for Manchester City as they were beaten 3-1 at home by leaders Leicester City.
In France, Vincent Enyeama was in goal and conceded a late penalty as they drew 1-1 with Rennes at home. Meanwhile, Elderson Echiejile remained unavailable for Monaco in their 1-0 win over Nice.
Leon Balogun played all 90 minutes in the heart of the Mainz 05 defense as they won 1-0 away at Hannover in the Bundesliga. Ogenyi Onazi was not listed in SS Lazio’s goalless draw at Genoa in Serie A. Joel Obi started and played for 57 minutes for Torino but couldn’t prevent them from going down at home 1-2 to Chievo. Sadiq Umar watched all through from the bench as AS Roma defeated Sampdoria 2-1.
In Israel, John Ogu scored his second goal for Hapoel Be’er Sheva as they beat Maccabi Netanya 2-0. And in Austria, Olanrewaju Kayode led Austria Vienna’s attack but fired blanks in their 1-0 win over Grodig.
Isaac Success played the entire duration but fired blanks in Granada’a 2-1 loss to Real Madrid. IK Uche was not listed by Malaga after completing his move last week.
