It was a fine weekend for Nigerian players in England as many of them shone for their respective clubs in the fourth round of the FA Cup which held over the weekend. Fcnaija.com takes a look at these players and several others across the world.
We start off in England where Kelechi Iheanacho continued to prove himself at the Etihad Stadium. The youngster banged in a hat-trick as Manchester City thrashed Aston Villa 4-0 to progress to the next round of the competition. It was a similar story for Chuba Akpom, who also scored a hat-trick for Hull City in their 4-1 win against Bury.
Alex Iwobi started for Arsenal and shone brightly, playing behind the main striker as he helped the Gunners to a 2-1 win over Burnley. Victor Moses started his first game for West Ham since returning from injury as he made a return to Anfield but couldn’t do enough to help his current club secure a win.
In Nottingham, Odion Ighalo returned to scoring ways as he scored a late winner for Watford in their 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest. Osaze Odemwingie also started his first game since returning from injury but fired blanks as Stoke City were beaten 1-0 at Crystal Palace.
Vincent Enyeama, usual, was in goal for Lille but failed to keep a clean sheet in their 1-1 draw with Marseille. Elderson Echiejile remained unavailable for AS Monaco as they were beaten 3-0 by Angers.
In Germany, Anthony Ujah played all 90 minutes but fired blanks as Werder Bremen were held to a 3-3 draw by Hertha Berlin. Leon Balogun was on from start to finish for Mainz 05 in their 1-0 win over Borussia Monchengldbach.
Ogenyi Onazi remained an unused substitute for the third straight game, as Lazio played out a goalless draw with Udinese in a fiery encounter.
In Morocco, Michael Babatunde starred for Raja Casablanca and provided an assist in their 2-0 friendly win over Renaissance Sportive de Berkane. Osaguona Ighodaro was the beneficiary of that assist, as he was on hand to convert for Raja’s second goal of the game.
Taye Taiwo scored his first goal for Finnish club, HJK Helsinki in their 1-0 win over IFK Mariehamn in the Finnish League Cup.
