It wasn’t an extremely good weekend for Nigerian players abroad, but there certainly were headline makers, either with goals, or overall impressive displays.
We start off in Turkey, where former Flying Eagles striker Aminu Umar scored a brace as Osmanlinspor beat Turkish giants Galatasaray 3-2. Also in the Turkish Super Lig, John Chibuike continued his goal-scoring form from the previous weekend as he scored twice, but was unlucky to be on the losing side as Gazientepspor lost 3-2 to Bursaspor. The other Nigerian at Gazientepspor, Gbenga Arokoyo was not listed.
Also in Turkey, Godfrey Oboabona was on from start to finish but couldn’t prevent Rizespor from going down 2-1 at the hands of Fenerbahce.
In France, Vincent Enyeama, as always, kept the goal for Lille but conceded three goals as they lost 3-1 at home to Troyes. Elderson Echiejile remained missing for AS Monaco as they thrashed Toulouse 4-0.
Eddy Ogenyi Onazi continued to enjoy the view from the bench at Lazio in Italy, as they emerged 4-1 winners over Chievo in a keenly contested Serie A game. Joel Obi was not listed in Torino’s 2-0 loss at Fiorentina.
In Germany, Anthony Ujah marked the resumption of the Bundesliga with a goal in Werder Bremen’s 3-1 win at Shalke 04. It was his eighth goal of the season. Leon Balogun played all game but couldn’t help Mainz record a win as they were beaten 1-0 by Ingolstadt.
Odion Ighalo returned to scoring ways after a three-game drought, as he opened the scoring for Watford in their 2-1 win over Newcastle United. The goal made it three for him against Newcastle this season, having scored a brace in their earlier meeting.
Victor Moses continued his comeback from injury as he made a 65th minute entry in West Ham’s 2-2 draw against Manchester City. In the same game, Kelechi Iheanacho replaced Fabian Delph on 76 minutes as both teams shared the spoils.
John Obi Mikel was on the winning side as Chelsea beat 10-man Arsenal 1-0. The 28-year old played all 90 minutes and did well enough to help them keep a clean sheet. Meanwhile, on the other side, Alex Iwobi wasn’t listed for the game.
In Israel, Anthony Nwakaeme scored his sixth goal of the season as Hapoel Be’er Sheva maintained top spot in the Ligat ha’Al. Nosa Igiebor was also on the score-sheet last weekend as he scored a stunning 20-yard strike in Maccabi Tel Aviv’s win.
