Arsenal head coach Arsene Wenger believes Argentina skipper Lionel Messi will beat Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona team mate Neymar Jr to the Ballon d’Or award on Monday.
With the Ballon d’Or set to be decided later today when Lionel Messi, Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo will discover who has been voted the best player over the past 12 months.
The Arsenal boss once again expressed his disliking for the award and tipped Messi to win back the crown he lost to Ronaldo two years ago.
“I’m a big enemy of the Ballon d’Or. Who will win it? You know as well as I do that it’s certainly Messi who will win it. I think so. Overall I’m not a big fan of that.
“As I told you I am not a big fan of that [award]. What is important is we are a team sport, and it’s not logical to me to just encourage individual effort. We live already in a society where it’s all about individualism.
“Coming from a team sport going to that as well is to me a little bit contradictory to what is the route of our sport.” Wenger told Arsenal Player.
The Ballon d’Or has exclusively belonged to Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the last eight years.
