The Spanish FA’s Competition Committee judge have expelled Real Madrid from this season’s Copa del Rey for wrongfully fielding a suspended player against Cadiz on Wednesday.
Russia winger Denis Cheryshev started in the fourth-round tie away to Cadiz despite being suspended after picking up a third yellow card in the semi-finals of last season’s competition while on loan at Villarreal when he was booked for a third time in the 3-1 defeat to Barcelona in March, with suspensions carried over into the following season’s competition.
Despite Florentino Perez’s protestations on Thursday that Los Blancos were innocent of any wrongdoing by playing Russian winger Denis Cheryshev at Ramon de Carranza.
The Spanish Football Federation’s (RFEF) Competition Commission ruled in Cádiz’s favour, finding the Galacticos guilty.
Madrid are now expected to take the case to the Appeals Committee, although it is believed it will act in line with its Competition counterpart, making the country’s Administrative Tribunal (TAD) their next port of call.
