The Uganda national team will be going for their 14th CECAFA Senior Challenge title in 2015 after seeing off hosts Ethiopia in a hard fought second semi final played on Thursday 3rd December at the Addis Ababa Stadium.
The two teams playe to a barren draw in regular and extra time and penalties were called to break the tie with Uganda emerging 5 – 4 winners as Ethiopia’s Gatoch Panom missed his kick to see his team miss out.
Dennis Okot, Joseph Ochaya, substitutes Muzamir Mutyaba, Isaac Muleme and Farouk Miya converted their spot-kicks for Uganda as Behaylu Girma, Aschalew Tamene, Eliyas Mamo and Anteneh Tesfaye scored for Ethiopia.
In the earlier semi final at the same venue, Rwanda hit the 2013 finalists Sudan 4 – 2 on post match penalties after the two teams drew 1 – 1 in an ill tempered game that saw Sudan reduced to ten men.
Bakri Abdelgadir was shown a straight red card on the 18th minute for an off the ball incident as players engaged in a physical confrontation.
Jean Baptise Mugiraneza saved Amavubi ten minutes from time with a goal after the tournament top scorer Atahir Eltahir had put Sudan in the lead nine minutes into extra time.
In the shootouts, the teams started positively with Ibrahim Maghoub and Haruna Niyonzima scoring for Sudan and Rwanda respectively. Rwandese keeper Eric Ndayishimiye saved Atahir’s spot kick with Jacques Tuyisenge scoring the next to put the Rwandese comfortably in the driving seat. Mohammed Tahir then scored for Sudan and Rwanda also responded with Djihad Bizimana.
Mazin stepped forward to take his but he blasted his kick wide and Ernest Sugira stepped forward for the decider and he did not make a mistake.
The two will face off on Saturday to fight for the title while the losing semi finalists will vie for the third place on the same day hours before the final.
